It doesn't matter how good your resume is when it comes to the interview. You may have had a professionally prepared resume which did the job in getting you to the next step. Now is the moment of truth, and it is up to you. No one can take the interview for you.
Chances are, you are competing with many other candidates for the opening. Companies do not enjoy the interviewing process any more than you do. In fact, if it is a large company. The person doing the interview is an HR person trying to get it over with as soon as possible. One way to do this is to eliminate the least impressive candidates who make major mistakes.
Here are 3 major job interview mistakes that will make your interview short and end your chance for the job.
1. Showing up late:
It doesn't matter what job it is, no employer wants an employee that isn't on time and ready to work a full day. If you show up late for your interview, you are telling the employer that you are very irresponsible. Expect a 5 minute interview or be shown the door immediately.
2. Rambling:
The interviewer doesn't care what your hobbies are, or what you did last month. They want to find the ideal candidate and get back to business as usual. When you ramble on about yourself, thinking you are being charming and a great person to have in the office, the interviewer is thinking you are annoying and wasting time. Focus on your expertise and experience pertaining to the job opening.
3. All about you:
There is a danger in going too far into your qualifications. Where employers do like confident professionals, they also want to know that they are hiring someone loyal. If you go in making demands instead of asking questions about the daily details of their company, you will give them the impression that it is all about you and you care nothing about them. No one likes a flight risk.
